One of the most basic requirements of any woodwork is a good wood work bench. While professional carpenters have custom-built wood work benches, the person who pursues this profession as a hobby usually settles for a more basic model.  Many times, the wood work bench is actually a repurposed table which has been modified a little here and there to suit the purpose.

What does it take to Qualify as a Good Wood Work Bench?

Primarily, the wood work bench will need to be strong enough to hold most of the power tools and the vise. The ideal work surface should be around three feet by six feet. The table top should be invariably of plywood which had been topped with MDF and at least ¼” of hardboard.  A good and comfortable height for the wood work bench would be about 37”, while the vise should not exceed a height of 8” from the table or it will be comfortable to work on it.

It is a good idea if you put some wheels under your wood work bench so you can move it easily wherever you need it. When you decide on your work spot, ensure that you have good wedges placed at the wheels, lest you run into an accident.

Of course, no wood work bench is worth its salt without as many drawers as it can take. Ideally, it should have at least half a dozen of shelves or drawers so the tools can be stored safely inside. The drawers should be spacious and if possible with special grooves for specific tools so that the tools can be protected from damage. The depth of the drawers may vary according to what type of tools you are likely to be stored there.

The vise on the table will always do with some extra reinforcement. If possible, attach some extra mounting to give it added strength. It is always a good idea to reinforce the work surface as well. This should best be done from behind and/or under to leave sufficient space in front for the drawers.

There will be many other small things that you will need to add in the course of time. However, to start with, the above-mentioned checklist would be sufficient for a very utilitarian wood work bench.  You can fashion this type of table for yourself out of scrap wood and old discarded tables you have at home.
